Rome, 14 Jan. (LaPresse) – “Listen to what happened. Today there was the resolution on Iran in the Senate, which we would have voted for along with the other political forces, since we stand by those who rebel against the Iranian regime, which we have always condemned for how it stifles freedoms and violently represses dissent. We had requested something simple: to put in writing in that text our opposition to unilateral military actions, conducted outside the framework of international law, which serve interests other than the freedom of so many young people, so many Iranian citizens who want to end tyranny. They said no. So we decided to abstain, while agreeing with the rest of the resolution: the absence of that passage is fundamental for us. Especially now that the 'Meloni-Tajani' doctrine has emerged, according to which international law matters… but only up to a certain point. And that point is set by the United States, case by case.”

This is what M5S leader Giuseppe Conte wrote on social media. “For the Meloni government, international law does not apply to the criminal Al-Masri, who was repatriated with the honors of a state flight. It does not apply in the Gaza Strip, where the Italian government remained a silent accomplice to the genocide carried out by Netanyahu’s government. It does not apply in Venezuela, where Meloni declared the U.S. military blitz “legitimate,” with the result that now Maduro’s number two is in government, while the real change concerned the governance of oil. If we let the law of the strongest, the most armed, prevail, we will fall into complete global disorder. Forget the arms race, we will plunge into the chaos of maximum insecurity and, therefore, the most humiliating servitude, hoping for protection. The community and international bodies have many levers to use on the economic and diplomatic fronts to change things. We support every form of real, concrete, international-law-respecting support for the demonstrators and hope for a democratic turn in Iran resulting from the self-determination of the Iranian people,” he added.
