Rome, 23 January (LaPresse) – "As far as the Board of Peace is concerned, Italy's position is one of openness and interest in the initiative. I believe that it is clear to everyone that Italy, but also Germany, can play a leading role in stabilising the Middle East, and I think that the work needed to consolidate a complex and fragile truce and transform it into a long-term solution, up to the two-state proposal, requires our involvement, and therefore we obviously have a position of openness and willingness." This was stated by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during joint press statements with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the intergovernmental summit between Italy and Germany at Villa Doria Pamphilj in Rome. ‘I think that it is never the best choice to exclude oneself a priori,’ added the prime minister, ‘I always think that at a time like this, the presence of countries like ours can make a difference, and so this is currently our position. Then we will see what the margins are for finding shared solutions.’
