Rome, 23 January (LaPresse) – "With regard to Greenland, I repeat what I have already said in the past about the crisis. I believe that with their undoubtedly questionable and assertive methods, the United States is raising a strategic issue, which does exist, concerning the Arctic at this time. The Arctic is one of the great strategic domains of the 21st century. And if the Arctic is one of the great strategic domains of the 21st century, I believe that this issue must be seriously addressed within the Atlantic Alliance." So said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during joint statements to the press with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the intergovernmental summit between Italy and Germany at Villa Doria Pamphilj in Rome. "I believe that with regard to security, the management of future maritime routes, and a territory rich in raw materials, which also has a privileged position in terms of anti-aircraft missile defence, all this, I believe, is the subject of serious consideration that the Atlantic Alliance must undertake and that we are all willing to do, because we all understand how important this is, and I do not believe that it is a problem solely for the United States,‘ added the Prime Minister, ’but I believe that the involvement of the United States is also necessary, of course, to address this issue." ‘So I remain optimistic about the possibility of bringing everyone back to the real issue, which is how NATO, the Atlantic Alliance, together, can raise its profile, increase its presence and coordinate in a territory that remains strategic for all of us,’ Meloni concluded.
