Rome, 23 January (LaPresse) – At the Italy-Germany intergovernmental summit currently underway at Villa Doria Pamphilj in Rome, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz signed an agreement on enhanced cooperation in the areas of security, defence and resilience. The document, divided into 34 points, states that Italy and Germany, as founding members of the European Union and NATO allies, ‘share a common responsibility for freedom, peace and security in Europe’ and ‘in light of the growing global challenges and threats that jeopardise stability and lasting peace on the European continent, both participants recognise the need to strengthen cooperation, particularly in the areas of security, defence and resilience’. . Italy and Germany, it continues, ‘reaffirm their shared commitment to strengthening existing security structures, such as NATO, the European Union, the United Nations and the OSCE. They recognise that enhanced cooperation will contribute to improving Europe's ability to protect the freedom, peace and security of their peoples, based on the principles of democracy, individual freedom and the rule of law’. The final part of the preamble to the agreement then emphasises that the two countries ‘agree that their coordinated efforts will focus in particular on restoring peace and security in Europe’.
