Rome, 15 February (LaPresse) – ‘What happened is unacceptable and we are waiting to verify responsibilities. That said, I reiterate that the safety of care is a constant commitment at all levels, i.e. the Ministry, Regions, health authorities and hospitals, to ensure that every patient always receives the best care with the minimum risk of harm to their health’. This was stated by Health Minister Orazio Schillaci in an interview with La Repubblica on the case of the child in very serious condition after undergoing a transplant of a damaged heart in Naples. ‘As soon as I heard the news, I gave instructions to send inspectors, because patient safety checks are one of the ministry's priority tasks,’ said the minister. “We are faced with a particularly serious case and we are also doing our part to verify what happened”. “We must ascertain whether the protocols were followed or whether there were any shortcomings in one or more stages of the donation and transplant in question,” Schillaci concluded.
