Rome, 20 February (LaPresse) – ‘Vice-President of the Superior Council of Magistrates’, Vittorio Bachelet ‘worked hard to ensure that the democratic system defeated the threat posed by terrorism to civil coexistence in the country, without resorting to extraordinary measures, relying on the constitutional principles that govern the judicial function’. So said the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. As president of Catholic Action, Bachelet worked to highlight the importance of the contribution of lay people to the activities of the Church, in accordance with the guidelines of the Second Vatican Council. He was cowardly assassinated on 12 February 1980 at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, at the end of a lecture, in the valuable work as a teacher with which he had trained generations of students who had the privilege of being the recipients of his teachings, in the belief that culture was an effective means of defeating all forms of oppression and arrogance. The Republic is grateful to Vittorio Bachelet for his work and his example,' concluded the Head of State.
