Rome, 23 February (LaPresse) – AVS, PD, M5S and IV request a briefing from the government following the US Supreme Court's decision on tariffs, directly calling on Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. "We ask you, sovereignists, you patriots: where do you stand in this war? Where are your words of de-escalation? Where is your solution? Faced with these threats, our government's silence is increasingly complicit and increasingly subordinate,‘ said AVS MP Marco Grimaldi. ’Europe is preparing to react and maintain a united front. What does Italy intend to do? Does it intend to strongly support a common European position? And again, does this government intend to activate protection and compensation measures for the sectors most affected? – echoed Vinicio Peluffo of the Democratic Party – Does the government intend to support these businesses? Or, in order not to upset the Trump administration, will it choose not to expose itself? We are not in favour of escalation, we are in favour of negotiation, multilateralism and shared rules, but negotiation is done from a position of strength and European unity. Not with our heads down, not with the strategy of playing dead and playing possum that this government has pursued so far. The defence of the national interest is not proclaimed, it is practised. And today, the national interest is defended with a clear European line, with support for businesses and with the ability to say frankly to our allies that Italy is not a land of conquest or a variable dependent on the choices of others. The government should come to the chamber, President Meloni should come, report and take responsibility for its choices, because what is at stake here is not a partisan controversy, but the economic credibility of the whole country.
