Rome, Mar. 3 (LaPresse) – “I believe that women are successful when they use their own approaches, when they leverage their specificities and added value in terms of humanity, concreteness, and speed. But I also mean in terms of a lower willingness to compromise; this applies in every field, even more so in politics. Just as I have never believed that female-specific policies exist, I am convinced that a female perspective on politics does exist, which is clearly something entirely different. No one will ever convince me that there are issues only for women or only for men. Every issue requires a composite sensitivity, and therefore obviously also a female point of view.”
This is what Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said while speaking at the event “1946-2026 Women’s Vote. Italian Democracy Turns Eighty” held at the Fencing Academy – Casa delle Armi of the Foro Italico Park in Rome. She added that ensuring "equal opportunities and a truly meritocratic society is a battle we still have to win," and "we will never truly achieve this as long as we are forced to believe that women need quotas or preferential mechanisms, because I think true freedom remains being able to earn your position on the field and not wait for it to be granted. Here too, I have always thought that the State’s role is not to decide at the table how many women must hold certain positions in every field, because the State cannot play the game for the people. What the State must be able to do, however, is ensure that the game is fair, that one half of the field is not flat while the other is uphill, one lane free and the other full of obstacles.”
“The State’s task is to guarantee equality at the starting point, to give everyone the opportunity to compete under the same conditions. Then, of course, it is up to each person to prove their worth, ability, and competence, because equality is still not a concession. Equality is a right, a right that has been denied for too long, and it is still denied today,” Meloni concluded.
