Rome, 29 March (LaPresse) – "On behalf of the Democratic Party, I wish to express our full solidarity with Cardinal Pizzaballa, Father Ielpo and all the faithful whom the Israeli authorities prevented today from celebrating Palm Sunday Mass at the Holy Sepulchre. The blind violence and boundless arrogance of the Israeli government have now reached one of the holiest sites of Christianity, offending the dignity of believers and humiliating the entire Christian community. Attacking freedom of worship is yet another violation of the most basic human rights, committed with virtual impunity, and represents an act of hostility towards millions of Christians around the world." So wrote the secretary of the PD, Elly Schlein, in a social media post. “We stand with the Patriarch of Jerusalem, the Custodian of the Holy Sepulchre and the entire Christian community of the Holy Land, who have always been witnesses to an ideal of peaceful coexistence that is worlds apart from the supremacism of Netanyahu and his right-wing extremist accomplices. The Italian government must strongly condemn this and, once and for all, distance itself from the criminal Netanyahu government, promoting concrete actions to stop and sanction its systematic violations of human rights and freedoms,” Schlein concluded.
