USA, Salvini: ‘Trump? You don’t argue with the Pope, you listen to him’

Torre Annunziata (Naples), 5 May (LaPresse) – “The Pope is not to be questioned, he is to be listened to.” This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini on the sidelines of the ceremony marking the start of the demolition of Palazzo Fienga in Torre Annunziata, in response to those asking him to comment on the latest remarks by US President Donald Trump regarding Pope Leo XIV. ‘The only thing I am convinced of,’ added Salvini, ‘is that we are and will remain friends and allies of the United States, regardless of this or that misunderstanding, this or that president. Attacking the Holy Father certainly serves no purpose and solves no problems.’ When asked if he could act as a “mediator” in the dialogue between Italy and the United States, Salvini replied: “I try to do my bit to help build peace, as the Holy Father has long been asking. I try to find a diplomatic, rather than a military, solution to the conflict in both Ukraine and Iran. That’s all; obviously, it doesn’t depend solely on me.”
