Capaci massacre, Mattarella: ‘A savage attack on the freedom and dignity of Italians’

Rome, 23 May (LaPresse) – ‘The date of 23 May has left its mark on the history of the Republic. The Capaci massacre, one of the bloodiest manifestations of the Mafia’s inhumanity, was an attack of unprecedented savagery against the freedom and dignity of Italians’. So said the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. “On this anniversary, my first, deeply felt thoughts go to Giovanni Falcone, Francesca Morvillo and the members of their security detail, Antonio Montinaro, Rocco Dicillo and Vito Schifani, who were brutally murdered on that tragic day. The names of Paolo Borsellino, Emanuela Loi, Agostino Catalano, Walter Eddie Cosina, Vincenzo Li Muli and Claudio Traina will always be linked to them by the same thread of remembrance; they were victims of the same subversive strategy and, like them, bore witness – even to the point of the ultimate sacrifice – to constitutional values incompatible with the infamous machinations of the Mafia,” added the Head of State.
