Rome, January 13 (LaPresse) – The 108th edition of the Giro d’Italia will begin in Albania with the first three stages. On Friday, May 9, the race will start with the Durres-Tirana stage, covering 164 km (1,800 meters of elevation gain and a King of the Mountains classification). The following day, there will be an individual time trial of 13.7 km in Tirana, featuring a 1.5 km climb at a 6% gradient. On Sunday, May 11, the stage will consist of 160 km from Vlora to Vlora, with 2,700 meters of elevation gain and a climb with a maximum gradient of 14%.
This will be the 15th time the Giro d’Italia starts outside Italy. The first foreign start occurred in 1965 in San Marino. Other foreign starts include: 1966 Monte Carlo (Monaco); 1973 Verviers (Belgium); 1974 Vatican City; 1996 Athens (Greece, marking the centenary of the modern Olympics and La Gazzetta); 1998 Nice (France); 2002 Groningen (Netherlands); 2006 Seraing (Belgium); 2010 Amsterdam (Netherlands); 2012 Herning (Denmark); 2014 Belfast (Northern Ireland); 2016 Apeldoorn (Netherlands); 2018 Jerusalem (Israel); 2022 Budapest (Hungary).
