Trento, Jan. 14 (LaPresse) – The Trento prosecutor's office has requested documents and files from the prosecution offices that have investigated the so-called Pantani case over time. Among the documents requested by the Trento magistracy are the statements made at the time and on several occasions to the Carabinieri by the former head of the Mondragone Camorra clan, who later became a collaborator of justice, according to whom ‘if Pantani won the Giro he would have thrown those who managed the bets out onto the street’. Under the magistracy's lens was the Madonna di Campiglio stage of the 1999 Giro d'Italia. The Pirate, with two stages to go, was firmly at the head of the classification with a lead of almost six minutes. But on the morning of 5 June 26 years ago, positive doping controls, on which there was suspicion of ‘manipulation’ by the Camorra, put him out of the running. ‘Mafia-type criminal association aimed at clandestine betting and linked to the cyclist's death’ is the crime hypothesis, so far without any suspects, being investigated by public prosecutor Patrizia Foiero who, according to LaPresse, has already heard 12 people informed about the facts.
