Milan, 13 Feb (LaPresse) – ‘That the curves have in the past been frequented by people with criminal records is something all too well known, as for the complicity of the “Ndrangheta with the curves this surprised us not a little”. This was said by CONI president Giovanni Malagò during his speech before the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the phenomenon of mafias and other criminal associations, including foreign ones, in sporting events. ‘Football and the world of sport are the injured party in this threat, but they are also called upon to take responsibility. ‘The football world is playing its part well, updating the current rules to ensure contexts of absolute serenity. CONI is alongside the FIGC and every other federation in this work to combat all forms of violence,' he added. Malagò then recalled that ‘the FIGC federal prosecutor's office has opened an independent investigation to ascertain the possible responsibilities of the two clubs involved (AC Milan, Inter, ed.)’ and that ‘the exchange of information between judicial and sports authorities takes place on the basis of protocols of understanding between CONI and the Public Prosecutor's Office’. 'Compared to a few years ago, a lot has been done, but in the meantime new things have happened that are difficult to imagine. Some critical issues cannot be solved by sport alone, for example there is the urgent issue of sports facilities, which must be technological and able to raise their standards of safety and comfort for spectators. Italy is lagging behind on the issue of stadiums,' Malagò concluded.
