La Liga denounces Manchester City before European Commission

Milan, 28 Feb (LaPresse/Ap) – The European Commission has confirmed it has received a complaint from Spanish La Liga accusing reigning Premier League champions Manchester City of breaching a number of financial rules. La Liga president Javier Tebas stepped up his attacks on City on Thursday, when he revealed that he had filed a complaint in 2023 and accused the UAE-backed club of causing a ‘serious distortion in the European Union's internal market’. According to Tebas, City effectively concealed costs by using outside companies to perform services that were never carried out. City, which is also awaiting a verdict on charges of more than 100 alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations, denied the allegation. ‘One can't help but think that this is a way of circumventing the rules. So we reported it to the European Union because, even though this is an English club, the European Union supervises any business activity within Europe,’ Tebas said at a press conference at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit. A Commission spokesman confirmed to the Associated Press that he had received the Spanish league's complaint, but could not comment on any ongoing assessment. Tebas' complaint relates to regulations on foreign subsidies from non-EU states that could distort the domestic market.
