Milan, March 4 (LaPresse) – "I hope that today an offer will be submitted, both from an economic-financial perspective and to clarify what needs to be done," said Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala during an interview on Non Stop News on RTL 102.5. He was commenting on reports suggesting that AC Milan and Inter Milan will present their plan to the Milan Municipality for acquiring the San Siro stadium, the surrounding areas, and the construction permits for a new stadium.
"Before the last holidays, we tried to convince the teams to renovate San Siro. And this is a historical fact. They worked on it for a few months and then said, 'It can't be done, it's too expensive.' So they started developing other plans, and in November, they told us, 'We are interested in purchasing San Siro and the surrounding areas,'" Sala explained.
Technical discussions then began to assess aspects such as noise restrictions, distance from residential areas, mobility, and green spaces: "Technical meetings that, I hope, will lead to an offer." At this point, Sala pointed out that "the law states that, upon receiving an offer, we must first analyze it to determine if it aligns with requirements, and then we must issue a public tender."
"If we receive the offer today, we will examine it and then report to the City Council," he continued. "If everything proceeds smoothly, there will be a 30- to 45-day bidding process, during which we will negotiate with the clubs with the goal of transferring ownership of the stadium and surrounding areas to them by the summer, before the holidays, ideally by July."
Looking ahead, Sala stated, "Nothing will happen until the Olympics. I remind everyone that the Winter Games opening ceremony will take place on February 6, 2026. After that, construction of a new stadium next to San Siro will begin, and it will take a few years. Once completed, the old San Siro will be regenerated. Therefore," the mayor concluded, "in my opinion, the old San Siro will remain in use at least until 2030. If I had to estimate when the new stadium will be ready, I would say 2030."
