Los Angeles (California), 22 Mar (LaPresse) – Mourning in the boxing world: former heavyweight champion George Foreman died last night at the age of 76. The boxer's family announced this on social media: ‘He lived a life characterised by unwavering faith, humility and determination’. Born in Texas, Foreman is remembered for his long boxing career that led him to be heavyweight champion of the world twice. An Olympic gold medal winner in Mexico City 1968, he won his first title in 1973 against Joe Frazier. In 1974 he was the protagonist against Muhammad Ali in the historic ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ fight in the then Zaire: he failed to defend his title in one of the most important matches in boxing history. After a stop, he returned to fighting in the late 1980s for ten years, regaining the Wba and Ibf titles, until his retirement in 1997.
