Rome, May 6 (LaPresse) – “Our new format has been a great success, I’m more than satisfied. I think those who love and understand football know that this season has been fantastic. We’ve had some truly incredible matches. The last day of the group stage was unbelievable. Some big teams were at serious risk of being eliminated. For example, Paris Saint-Germain, which is now in the semifinals: if they had lost one or two matches, they would have been out. So, fantastic season.”
This is what UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said in an interview with SportMediaset.
“I think even those who always criticize everything have now understood. Whether they’re willing to admit it is another matter. Inter is the only Italian team that made it past the group stage and reached the semifinals,” he added.
“We already knew that the real protagonists of football are the fans—and the players. Not us administrators or referees. The most important are the fans and the players. The fans have shown that they love football and want it to remain open and accessible to everyone. I love Italian fans, because for them, football means everything. At least from what I see, they seem less involved in politics or sports politics. However, I have to say, I didn’t see them protest much against the Super League. It was mainly English fans who made themselves heard. But we respect the fans: we have a memorandum of understanding with fan organizations and try to involve them as much as possible,” he added, referring to the protest against the Super League.
