Vatican City (Vatican), May 28 (LaPresse) – “Pope Leo XIV will greet the Giro d’Italia cyclists on Sunday, June 1 at 3:30 p.m. as they pass through Vatican City State.” This was announced in a statement by the Dicastery for Culture and Education.

“In memory of Pope Francis, who had welcomed the proposal submitted by Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, Prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, and carried out together with the Governorate of Vatican City State and Athletica Vaticana,” the statement continues.

The project of having the Giro d’Italia pass through the Vatican — the “first stage” leading up to the Jubilee of Sport, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, June 14–15 — was born on October 28, 2021, during the ceremony in which Athletica Vaticana received its official certificate of membership from the International Cycling Union (UCI).

The event was officially presented on April 29 at the Capitoline Hill by Bishop Paul Tighe, Secretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education.

The final stage of the 108th edition of the Giro d’Italia will start at the Baths of Caracalla. In non-competitive mode, the cyclists will enter Vatican City via Via Paolo VI through the Petriano Entrance.
