Rome, 6 June (LaPresse) – Twelve years after the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, former Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, 38, has returned to competition. The South African runner took part in the Ironman 70.3 with the permission of his probation officer. The race consisted of a 2 km swim, a 90 km bike ride and a 21 km run. The first Paralympic athlete to compete in the Olympics (London 2012), Pistorius finished the race in 555th place overall and third in the category for athletes with physical disabilities. The former athlete was convicted of the murder of Reeva Steenkamp in 2013. He claimed to have mistaken his girlfriend, then 29, for an intruder. After serving part of his sentence, he was granted parole in 2024, due to expire in 2029. The sentence allowed Pistorius to resume some public activities, provided he was under supervision. Despite his conditional release, his presence at sporting events is a source of controversy both in the world of sport and in society in general.
