Turin, 9 Jul (LaPresse) – "It's something I already had in my head and with my family we talked about it. The first week at Wimbledon was demanding and I did not have much time to reflect, but I think this is the best way to say goodbye". With these words, in a press conference at Wimbledon, Fabio Fognini announced his retirement at the age of 38. ‘I love this sport and the motivation is still high, tennis has accompanied me all my life,’ added the Italian tennis player, who retired in the first round of the Slam on the English grass courts after a splendid match played with Carlos Alcaraz. "I have so many good memories that I keep in my heart, something special. This day, though, I knew it would come". "My dream would have been to finish next year in Monte Carlo with family and friends. But that's life and I'm still happy to be able to say goodbye here to my professional career,' confessed the Ligurian player. 'I will not play any more tournaments, I'm leaving today. I have suffered a lot from injuries in the last few years and at my age it becomes more and more difficult. I think this is the best decision I can make. I played on the most beautiful court in the world, it is the perfect farewell".
