Milan, 31 July (LaPresse) – Matteo Materazzi, brother of Marco, former defender for Inter Milan and the 2006 World Cup-winning Italian national team, is suffering from a rare form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The news was revealed by his wife Maura, who has also launched a fundraiser to try to help her husband. ‘Many of you may not yet be aware that my husband Matteo Materazzi was diagnosed with a rare form of ALS in September 2024,’ Mrs Materazzi wrote in an Instagram post accompanied by a photo of her husband in an electric wheelchair. ‘At the moment, Matteo can no longer walk and can only move his hands, and he is starting to have difficulty breathing.’ "This disease leaves little hope, but there is a small light on the horizon! An experimental treatment made in the US, but it is very expensive, as it is a therapy that would have to be tailored to him, but in the future it could help all those who have the same mutation as him. We are doing everything we can,‘ concludes Mrs Maura, ’but with your help it will be easier." Matteo Materazzi is 49 years old and, like his brother Marco, tried his hand at a career in football but never made it beyond a few appearances in the Lega Pro. After hanging up his boots, he remained in the world of football as a football agent.
