World Cup for Clubs, FIFA considers a tournament every two years: from 32 to 48 teams

Turin, Aug. 18 (LaPresse) – FIFA is considering organizing the Club World Cup every two years starting in 2029, a move that would put more pressure on the international calendar and spark another backlash from the Premier League and UEFA, according to The Guardian. The next Club World Cup will take place in four years' time, following the first 32-team tournament held in the United States this summer, but there appears to be pressure from major clubs to make it a biennial event. Real Madrid is said to have raised the issue during talks with FIFA in Miami in June, a proposal that has gained support from other clubs that did not qualify for this year's tournament, including Barcelona, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Napoli. Organizing the new competition every two years would further increase tensions, but both sides recognize that the entire global calendar after 2030 is open for negotiation.Furthermore, according to The Guardian, FIFA is reviewing the qualification criteria for the 2029 Club World Cup and may increase the limit of two clubs per country. The number of teams involved could increase from 32 to 48. FIFA would be willing to remove the June international break to ease the workload on players and make room for events such as the Club World Cup, although this would be opposed by UEFA, which uses the summer dates to host the finals of its Nations League.
