Rome, 24 August (LaPresse) – Jannik Sinner arrives at the US Open, broadcast live and free-to-air on SuperTennis, as reigning champion and world number 1. Having climbed to the top of the rankings for the first time on 10 June 2024, he begins his 64th week as ATP number 1 on Monday: this is the fourth longest streak for a tennis player in his first experience as world number 1 since the introduction of computerised rankings in 1973.But as soon as the first match of the main draw is played at Flushing Meadows, Alcaraz will be ahead of him in the real-time projections. In fact, taking away the points earned at the 2024 US Open, 2,000 for Sinner and only 50 for the Spaniard beaten by Botic Van de Zandschulp in the second round, the Murcian is virtually ahead of the Italian. It was just after the US Open three years ago that Alcaraz rose to the top of the rankings for the first time by winning his first Slam. With that victory, he became the youngest number one in tennis history, at just 19 years old. To have a chance of retaining the top spot, Sinner must at least reach the third round.
