Rome, 28 August (LaPresse) – Jannik Sinner advances to the third round of the US Open. The world number one defeated Australia's Alexei Popyrin, ranked 36th, in three sets, with a score of 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in 2 hours and 2 minutes. In the first set, after 43 minutes, with a game to 15, he took a set in which he had 55% of first serves in play, but with an 81% success rate (13/16). His second serve was also positive at 62%, compared to Popyrin's 47%. Sinner's superiority was also evident in the number of times he forced the Australian into an unforced error, 17 times in total. The second set ended with one of the best games from the No. 1, who hit two forehand winners interspersed with an ace. It was a peculiar set, dominated in terms of score by Sinner despite a first serve percentage of 38% (with a 73% success rate). Popyrin's 64% first serve percentage and only two unforced errors in the entire set were not enough: on the second serve, in fact, the 1999-born tennis player won just one point out of seven. In the third set, Sinner broke serve in the third game and it was plain sailing from there. Sinner will face Canada's Shapovalov in the next round.
