Rome, Sept. 2 (LaPresse) – 45-year-old American Venus Williams continues her dream run at the US Open. Teaming up with Canadian Leylah Fernandez, with whom she had never played before this tournament, she has reached the quarterfinals, marking her best doubles result at a major since 2016.

Venus and Fernandez — a 2021 US Open singles finalist — pulled off a surprise victory over the 12th seeds, Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova and China's Zhang Shuai, winning 6-3, 6-1 in 74 minutes on a packed and passionate Louis Armstrong Stadium.

“Leylah and I are on the same wavelength, and we hope to keep it going,” said Venus, who called Fernandez her best doubles partner apart from her sister Serena, with whom she won 14 Grand Slam titles in doubles.

“Serena is really happy for me and Leylah, and she gave us some advice. But we need her in our box: Serena, you have to come,” Venus added.
