Riga (Latvia), Sept. 7 (LaPresse/AP) – Historic victory for Georgia, which eliminates France (final score 80–70) at the European Basketball Championship and qualifies for the tournament’s quarterfinals for the first time. "Incredible. I'm really happy, congratulations to my teammates, to everyone, to all our fans in Georgia and here," commented center Giorgi Shermadini after the win. "France is fantastic, but today we played better both defensively and offensively," he added. In the 2022 edition, France finished second behind Spain. Interestingly, both former finalists missed the quarterfinals, where Georgia will now face Finland, which yesterday eliminated Nikola Jokic’s Serbia.
