Rome, 8 September (LaPresse) – Jannik Sinner's first period at the top of the ATP rankings, having become world number 1 on 10 June 2024, has come to an end after 65 weeks. Since the introduction of computerised rankings, only three players have remained number 1 for longer after reaching the top of the rankings for the first time: Roger Federer (237 weeks), Jimmy Connors (160) and Lleyton Hewitt (75). Italy remains a powerhouse in men's tennis in 2025. The only country with two players in the quarter-finals of the men's singles at the US Open, we can boast four Top 30 players this week, as only the United States can do, thanks to Luciano Darderi, winner of the Genoa Challenger, rising to number 30. In addition, there are currently four Italians at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin: Jannik Sinner, already qualified; Lorenzo Musetti, eighth in the singles Race; Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori, sixth in the doubles Race. Thanks to his victory in the US Open final, Carlos Alcaraz is back at number 1 in the world for the first time since 10 September 2023. He has been there for 37 weeks so far, spread over four different periods. The Spaniard has won his sixth Slam, like Boris Becker and Stefan Edberg, and has climbed to 14 “Grand Titles” (a category in which the ATP includes Slams, Nitto ATP Finals, Masters 1000 and Olympic Games).
