Basketball, Polonara finds bone marrow donor: ‘90% compatible, I'll have surgery soon’

Milan, 15 September (LaPresse) – Achille Polonara will undergo a bone marrow transplant to fight myeloid leukaemia. He revealed this himself in an interview with Corriere della Sera. He spent a few days at home in Bologna, and today he has some tests before being admitted to hospital: ‘It's an American girl who is 90% compatible,’ he explains. ‘I was lucky, there were two donors who were 90% compatible, including a German boy, but they opted for her because they were able to contact her immediately.’ ‘After I'm admitted tomorrow, I'll have to undergo a course of chemotherapy that will last 5-6 days. The transplant should take place around 23-24 September,’ added the former Virtus Bologna national team forward, now playing for Dinamo Sassari, who wanted to sign him despite the uncertainty surrounding his future. It will be a short wait for Polonara, who was diagnosed last June after undergoing medical tests. In 2023, he had a testicular tumour removed and returned to the court after a few months.
