Davis Cup: Sonego called up, replacing Musetti

Rome, 14 November (LaPresse) – Lorenzo Sonego will replace Lorenzo Musetti in Bologna. This was the decision made by Filippo Volandri, captain of Team Italia Lavoropiù, for the Final 8 scheduled from 18 to 23 November. All matches will be broadcast live and unencrypted on SuperTennis. Rai 1 will also broadcast Italy's semi-final and final matches if the Azzurri manage to beat Austria in the quarter-finals. Sonego made his debut on 26 November 2021 in Turin against the United States, beating Reilly Opelka 6-3, 7-6(4). So far, he has played 11 matches for Italy, playing 9 singles matches (6 wins, 3 losses) and 3 doubles matches (3 wins). He was part of the team that won the Davis Cup in the 2023 finals in Malaga, winning the decisive doubles matches with Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals against the Netherlands (beating Koolhof/Griekspoor 6-3 6-4) and in the semi-finals against Serbia (victory over Djokovic/Kecmanovic 6-3 6-4). In the 2023 edition, the Turin native was decisive in the group stage. His successes in Bologna against Chile played a decisive role in the Azzurri's qualification for the Final 8. On that occasion, Sonego defeated Nicolas Jarry in singles, then returned to the court with Musetti: together they defeated Barrios Vera/Tabilo.
