Milan, 20 Nov. (LaPresse) – Qualifications for the 2027 Basketball World Cup are underway. With one week to go before the debut against Iceland in Tortona (Thursday, 27 November, 8 p.m.), head coach Luca Banchi has released his first list of players called up. Among the Azzurri, the name of Achille Polonara stands out. Although he will not be able to join the team, he will be the captain and remain an integral part of the group. With 94 appearances for the Azzurri, Achi already held this role against Hungary in February 2024 (EuroBasket 2025 qualifiers). Luigi Suigo, Diego Garavaglia and Luca Vincini have been called up to the senior national team for the first time, alongside Elisèe Assui and Giovanni Veronesi, who are among the athletes available. Francesco Ferrari, the only player selected from the Serie A2 championship, has never made his senior debut despite being part of the team in the February 2025 “window”.
