Olympia (Greece), Nov. 26 (LaPresse) – The Olympic flame for Milan-Cortina 2026 was lit in front of the remains of the Temple of Hera in Olympia. The fire was ignited by actress Mary Mina, playing the role of high priestess, accompanied by vestal virgins wearing garments reminiscent of ancient Greek attire. The lighting of the sacred flame took place during Monday’s rehearsals: the official ceremony today is being held indoors at the Archaeological Museum due to bad weather, although a pale sun appeared over Olympia in the morning. At the moment the flame was lit in the museum’s main hall, applause broke out. The first torchbearer is the Greek Petros Gkaidatzis, who celebrated his birthday in Olympia just yesterday. The Hellenic rower, bronze medalist at Paris 2024, received the torch and an olive branch in the museum’s main hall before heading outside. At the same time, a dove was released as a symbol of peace. Among the first torchbearers are two Italian sports legends: Stefania Belmondo and Armin Zoeggeler.
