Turin, 26 December (LaPresse) – Jean-Louis Gasset died this morning at the age of 72, as announced by his family to L'Équipe. A former midfielder who spent most of his playing career at Montpellier, he later moved into coaching, alternating between assistant roles, notably under Luis Fernandez, and head coach roles at the start of his career. A prominent figure in French football, he spent many years alongside Laurent Blanc (2007-2016), whom he had known since they both played for Montpellier. Their collaboration, which began at Bordeaux, was initially marked by a French league title in 2009, the same year the team also won the League Cup and the Champions Trophy. Indispensable alongside Blanc, he followed the former French international defender to the national team and then to PSG, where he significantly enriched his trophy cabinet by winning three French league titles, three League Cups, two French Cups and three more Champions Trophies. Their collaboration ended in June 2016. In January 2017, Gasset took over as coach of Montpellier. After half a season in which he saved the club from relegation, he spent two years at Saint-Étienne before taking over the Ivorian national team in 2022.
