Turin, 16 March (LaPresse) – Jannik Sinner defeated Daniil Medvedev 7-6(6) 7-6(4) to win the BNP Paribas Open, a Masters 1000 tournament played on the outdoor hard courts of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, for the first time in his career. This is the sixth title in this category of tournaments for the world No. 2, who has won every one contested on hard courts. If we add to these the Australian Open, the US Open and the Nitto ATP Finals, historically only Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic had achieved this before him, but at 24 years and 7 months, Sinner is the youngest ever to do so. Furthermore, Sinner is also the first Italian to win 100 matches in the Masters 1000. This is the South Tyrolean’s 25th title overall on the major circuit, secured thanks to his ninth victory in his last ten matches against Medvedev (world No. 11 and the tournament’s top seed). The match, which lasted one hour and 55 minutes, was far tougher than the two-set result suggests, with Sinner forced to come back from 0-4 down in the second-set tie-break. Medvedev, who loses his third final in California following those in 2023 and 2024, takes comfort in returning to the Top 10 in the ATP rankings.
