Rome, 23 April (LaPresse) – ‘Italy at the World Cup in place of Iran? Firstly, I don’t think it’s possible; secondly, I would feel offended. You have to earn your place at the World Cup.’ These were the words of CONI President Luciano Buonfiglio, speaking on the sidelines of the “Città di Roma” award ceremony organised by OPES, regarding the proposal put forward to FIFA by US President Donald Trump’s envoy, Davide Zampolli, to admit Italy to the 2026 World Cup – having been eliminated in the play-offs by Bosnia – in place of Iran.
