Milan, 6 June (LaPresse) – ‘The Champions League? In sport, you always have to raise the bar. Arrogance is looking down on others, but ambition is healthy; it’s part of sport. It’s right.’ These were the words of Inter president Beppe Marotta, speaking at the Serie A Festival in Parma. If he were to win the Champions League, he might even retire. ‘The Champions League is always different. Serie A is a stage cycling race; in the long run, the best team wins. The Champions League is like a Milan-Sanremo; the best team doesn’t always win. It also depends on the draw – just think of Bayern v PSG ‘only’ in the semi-finals… And then the schedule isn’t linear; it goes in waves,’ said Marotta, who reiterated his stance on Chivu’s contract renewal. ‘I’ve always described it as a formality; both sides are keen to move forward together. The agreement is in place and will be signed as soon as he returns from his holiday. The manager in a team is a leader; he manages a group that becomes a team. There is a difference: a group is a collection of individuals, whereas a team shares values and objectives. Well, the team has recognised him as their leader.’
