Caracas (Venezuela), January 7 (LaPresse) – Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez met yesterday with U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House, just days before the contested inauguration of Nicolas Maduro for a third term as President of Venezuela.

Biden and Gonzalez agreed that “the victory of Gonzalez's electoral campaign should be honored through a peaceful transfer back to democratic governance,” according to a White House statement on the meeting. Both also expressed serious concerns over “the unacceptable and indiscriminate use of repression by Maduro and his representatives against peaceful protesters, democracy activists, and civil society.”

“We had a long, productive, and cordial conversation with President Biden and his team,” Gonzalez told reporters. “Naturally, we thanked the U.S. government for the support it has given us in this struggle for the democratic recovery of Venezuela. It is a commitment we carry with us and will continue to pursue until the last day of the president’s term.”
