Los Angeles (California, USA), Jan 8 (LaPresse/AP) – After the fire that hit the Pacific Palisades neighbourhood of Los Angeles, a second blaze has broken out in the northeast of the city and is advancing rapidly. The new fire, in the Eaton area of Altadena, broke out near a nature preserve shortly before 6:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday night, and the flames spread so quickly that staff at a senior care centre had to push dozens of residents in wheelchairs and hospital beds down the street to a car park, where they waited for ambulances and other vehicles to take them to safety. To the west, the Pacific Palisades fire that broke out in the local morning got out of control overnight. The Los Angeles Fire Department appealed to off-duty firefighters to help them fight the flames, which were propelled by winds that reached 97 kilometres per hour in some places, resulting in scenes of chaos and fleeing residents. The wind was too strong for the fire department's planes to intervene.
