US, prisoner exchange with Taliban: two Americans freed

Washington (U.S.), Jan. 21 (LaPresse) – Two American citizens and a Taliban leader have been freed in a prisoner exchange between Washington and Kabul. The two Americans freed in the exchange, which was brokered by the Biden Administration, are Ryan Corbett and William McKenty, according to a Trump Administration official. In exchange, Khan Mohammed, sentenced to life in prison in 2008 on drug trafficking and terrorism charges, was freed. Mohammed, 55, had been incarcerated in California. The Trump White House applauded the release and thanked Qatar for its help in facilitating the deal, but also pressured the Taliban to release other Americans held in Afghanistan. “The Trump administration will continue to call for the release of all Americans detained by the Taliban, especially in light of the billions of dollars in U.S. aid they have received in recent years,” said White House National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes.
