El Salvador: Former President Mauricio Funes Dies in Nicaragua

Rome, Jan. 22 (LaPresse) – Former President of El Salvador, Mauricio Funes, has died in Nicaragua at the age of 65. In office from 2009 to 2014, Funes was the first leftist president of El Salvador and had been a refugee in Nicaragua since 2016 due to accusations of corruption in his home country. His death was announced in a statement by Nicaragua's Ministry of Health. The cause of death is attributed to a "severe chronic illness."
