Congo, Italian Missionary: "I Am Afraid to Leave My House"

Rome, January 28 (LaPresse) – "At the moment, I am in Kinshasa, and I am afraid to leave my house because of possible repercussions on a white person. There is a very tense atmosphere in the city; today, there have been demonstrations in support of the Congolese army against the M23 aggressors. This has resulted in vandalism targeting shops and embassies, such as those against the Rwandan, Ugandan, and French embassies, and attempts to burn tires in front of the U.S. embassy," said Father Davide Marcheselli, an Italian missionary in Congo, to LaPresse about the situation in the country.

"The key events are unfolding in Goma," Father Marcheselli continued, "which does not seem to be fully under the control of the Congolese army, supported by popular movements and other armies, such as the South Africans and the Rwandans. In recent days, the escalation of the M23 movement has expanded, and now they are trying to drive out the regular army."

Regarding the situation of Christians, Father Marcheselli stated: "There are no particular issues; everything is calm."
