Manila (Philippines), Feb 5 (LaPresse/AP) – Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte has been impeached by the House of Representatives after a majority of lawmakers, many of whom are allies of the president with whom she has had a bitter political feud, signed a petition to remove her from office.
House Secretary-General Reginald Velasco announced during a plenary session of the lower house of Congress that at least 215 lawmakers signed the impeachment petition against Duterte—more than enough to send the case to the Senate, which will act as a tribunal to try the vice president, who is the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
The charges against her include violations of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, corruption, and other high crimes.
