US: White House announces release of American detained in Russia

Washington (Usa), 11 Feb (LaPresse) – The White House announced the release of American Marc Fogel by Russian authorities. Steve Wiktoff, President Donald Trump's special envoy for Russia and Ukraine, announces a note from the National Security Council, ‘is leaving Russian airspace with Marc Fogel, an American who has been detained in Russia’. President Trump, Steve Witkoff and the president's advisers ‘negotiated an exchange that serves as a show of good faith on the part of the Russians and a signal that we are moving in the right direction to end the brutal and terrible war in Ukraine,’ the statement says. ‘By tonight, Marc Fogel will be on American soil and reunited with his family and loved ones thanks to President Trump's leadership,’ the note concludes. Marc Fogel, a school teacher, was arrested in August 2021 for attempting to enter Russia with 17 grams of marijuana for medical use. In June 2022, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
