Kiev (Ukraine), 24 Feb. (LaPresse/AP) – ‘We hope to be able to end this war this year’. So said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, reflecting on the toll the conflict has taken on his country and its frontline soldiers. However, Zelensky said, to prevent a new aggression by the Russians after the cessation of fighting, Ukraine and its allies will have to ‘put them in their place, in their territory’ and create a security infrastructure that acts as a deterrent. ‘If Ukraine becomes part of the EU and NATO in the near future, it will obviously help us a lot and I don't think they will return,’ he said. “We will have a strong army, strong allies and strong unity, in my opinion, because (Russia) will never forgive the world for not having won,” he concluded.
