EU-India: von der Leyen, Imec corridor is historic opportunity

Brussels, 28 Feb (LaPresse) – ‘India can play a unique role as a bridge between the Global South and the rest of the world. Between the Indo-Pacific and Europe. And Europe is ready to invest to help make this happen. Through Global Gateway, our EUR 300 billion global infrastructure strategy, we can invest in projects to transport energy throughout India and between India and the world. And this is just the beginning of what can be done to build this connectivity between India, Europe and the regions between us. The India-Middle East-Europe (Imec) corridor launched here in New Delhi in 2023 during India's G20 Presidency is a historic opportunity to bring this to life. It is an extraordinary project,’ So says the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, during her speech on the occasion of her visit to India. ‘It can be,’ she added, ’a modern golden road, directly connecting India, the Persian Gulf and Europe. With a rail link, this will make trade between India and Europe 40% faster. With an electric cable and pipeline for clean hydrogen. And a high-speed data cable to connect some of the world's most innovative digital ecosystems. This corridor is much more than ‘simply’ a railway or a cable. It is a green, digital bridge across continents and civilisations. And it can help bring us closer together and increase trade on everything from batteries to clean hydrogen and digital services. It can be a win-win situation for Europe, India and our partners. We are ready to invest in concrete projects that can already start making these connections. Europe is open for business and we are ready to invest in our common future with India'.
