Berlin (Germany), 9 Mar (LaPresse/AP) – Some 40,000 passengers are affected by the ‘early’ strike by workers at Hamburg Airport that took place this morning, while a planned day of mobilisation across Germany is expected tomorrow, with negotiations for new contracts underway. According to reports from the airport, only 10 out of more than 280 scheduled flights were operated as planned this morning. Many service counters were understaffed, while passengers queued to ask about cancellations. The early strike, said to have taken place with only about half an hour's notice, came ahead of a wider series of pre-announced strikes at 13 airports in Germany on Monday, organised by the ver.di union. The union, whose members work in sectors including passenger services and cargo screening, called the strike to pressure company representatives during collective bargaining negotiations.
