USA, media: China froze TikTok deal after Trump's tariff announcement

Washington (USA), April 5 (LaPresse) – The deal for the sale of TikTok was practically finalized, but it was withdrawn on Thursday after Donald Trump announced new tariffs against China. This is what The Hill reports, citing sources familiar with the negotiations. Trump was ready to sign an executive order approving a deal that would have separated TikTok’s U.S. operations into a new company, allowing the popular social media app to continue operating in the United States in light of the law requiring its Chinese parent company ByteDance to divest from the app or face a ban in the U.S. However, according to The Hill’s source, ByteDance representatives told the White House after Trump’s tariff announcement on Wednesday that China would no longer approve the deal without tariff negotiations. On Friday, Trump signed an executive order granting TikTok another 75-day extension, stating that "tremendous progress" had been made but that the deal needs "more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed."
