EU Commission: ‘Use of disposable phones in US missions never indicated’

Brussels, 14 Apr. (LaPresse) – ‘We deny having given instructions to our staff to use disposable phones during official missions to the United States. This is not mentioned in the information sheets on travel advice or in any other document’. This was stated by the European Commission spokesman, Balazs Ujvari, commenting on the rumours published by the Financial Times. ‘We have recently updated several information sheets on country-specific travel recommendations for officials. They reflect the latest changes in the way the Commission communicates and the general increase in cybersecurity threats globally,’ he adds. ’Finally, we recommend linking the electronic visa to an EU laissez-passer for senior officials in order to emphasise the official nature of the visit and facilitate visa procedures at embassies prior to departure. Again, these updated recommendations have been included in many other country information sheets for the attention of senior officials travelling.’
