Brussels, April 14 (LaPresse) – The European Union has suspended its countermeasures against the unjustified US tariffs to allow time and space for EU-US negotiations. The suspension was first announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen last week and will take effect tomorrow.
Today, the European Commission adopted two legal acts: the first imposes EU countermeasures, and the second suspends all such measures until July 14, 2025. The decision, suspending for a maximum of 90 days the EU countermeasures against US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the EU, comes in response to the 90-day delay by the United States on so-called reciprocal tariffs.
In total, the suspended EU countermeasures cover $21 billion worth of US exports. As part of the EU's efforts to find a negotiated solution with the United States, European Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic is in Washington, DC today to meet with his US counterparts to explore the possibilities for a negotiated solution.
As President von der Leyen clarified in her statement, the EU wants "to give negotiations a chance," but if the talks are not satisfactory, the EU countermeasures will take effect. In addition to the suspended countermeasures against US tariffs on steel and aluminum, preparatory work continues for further EU countermeasures.
