Frankfurt (Germany), April 29 (LaPresse) – "The right-wing populist Meloni is already seen by many as the secret leader of Europe." This is what the German tabloid Bild writes in its online edition, in a lengthy article analyzing the career of the Prime Minister. "She has a good relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump, has taken a strong stance against Vladimir Putin, and even now, as heads of state and dignitaries from around the world gathered in Rome for the Pope’s funeral, Giorgia Meloni received a great deal of attention," Bild writes. The article recalls the Prime Minister’s origins, stating that "she was long underestimated." "When she won the parliamentary elections with her party, Brothers of Italy, and entered government alongside Matteo Salvini’s League—Salvini being a friend of Putin—and Forza Italia, the party of the late scandal-ridden billionaire politician Silvio Berlusconi, it caused great dismay in the European political scene," Bild continues, noting that "the greatest concern was her not always clear relationship with the fascism of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini." "Apparently, this didn’t matter much to Italian voters, who were seeking a fresh start. Meloni appeals to traditional Catholic Italy and its conservative family model. Unlike the AfD in Germany or the nationalists of Marine Le Pen in France, Meloni has linked right-wing ideology to Christian values." Bild, which also mentions the premier’s private life ("The 'Dolce vita' in politics: something hardly conceivable in Germany, but well accepted in Italy"), adds that "journalistic criticism, on the other hand, is not well received by Meloni’s government." The article goes on to say that "Meloni has also succeeded in asserting herself in international politics."
